STUDIES ON ANTIULCER ACTIVITY OF Solanum melongena (SOLANACEAE)

Humans find food and medicines from nature which were used to treat and heal many ailments. The antiulcer activity of methanolic extract of roots of Solanum melongena (solanaceae) was investigated in Pyrolus ligation ulcer and Ethanol induced ulcer models in Wistar albino rats. The methanolic extract of Solanum melongena at doses of 200 mg/kg p.o, 400 mg/kg p.o, showed dose dependant significant inhibition of the gastric lesions in both the models. The extract showed significant (P<0.01) reduction in gastric content volume, free acidity and ulcer index when compared to control. Results prove that methanolic extract was found to possess anti-ulcerogenic as well as ulcer healing properties, which might be due to its anti-secretory activity.
